Loss of Balance | Exhibition of MOME Media Design BA 2 in Telep Gallery

2021. May 27., 18:00 Telep Gallery, 1075, Madách Imre út 8

The year 2020 confronted us with unusual situations, the balances of everyday life changed, the uncertainty of the lockdowns and the ever-changing rules pervaded work, family, socialisation, culture, politics, in fact all aspects of life. Many had to adapt to completely new circumstances, in new roles. During their design assignments for the autumn semester, the second year students of the Media Design BA department addressed the issue of the lost balance.

After brainstorming, personal definition and representation of the theme, they realised their kinetic installations with analogue programming. The created sculptures focus on an everyday object, a simple object familiar to everyone, which, complemented by the motif of uncertainty and floating, throw new light on our habits associated with them. Their metaphorical solutions were inspired by well-known kinetic works such as Arthur Ganson’s Madeline’s Thinking Chair or Julius von Bismarck’s rotating parabola Egocentrik System, one of the most outstanding installations at Art Basel 2015.

As written by Jean Baudrillard in his text titled The Xerox and the Infinite: ‘Even the most intelligent machines are only what they are, (...) They lack the irony of operation and the operational surplus of pleasure and suffering, through which people move away from their definition and get closer to their goals. However, the structures designed by the young media designers are not without irony, awkwardness and human traits, a fact which means that their machines in fact hold up a mirror to us, even if only for a few selected moments.
