The Renaissance marked, in Europe, the appearance of a new historical figure, that of the collector. Having recognized the endless potentials of collecting as a cultural practice, not only did early modern collectors usher in new modes of inquiry, and of knowledge production, but also contributed towards our notion of modern individuality. My research focuses on these parallel developments, without losing sight of the baffling array of objects contained within cabinets of curiosities.
